Cultivate a Growth Mindset

BRAINS CAN CHANGE & GROW

Researchers have discovered the brain’s ability to change and grow, known as neuroplasticity. Like a muscle, the brain gets stronger as you use it. When the neurons in your brain are activated in a particular pattern, connections form and it becomes faster and easier for your brain to follow that same pattern in the future.

Repeated practice and continuing to challenge ourselves strengthens neural pathways that make our brains stronger and smarter. Check out this short video.

This is incredible, because as parents, we can improve and break the cycles of our past. We can model continuously learning, trying new things, and working through challenging tasks with perseverance.

We can help our children develop talents, abilities, and intellect beyond what they are born with by cultivating a growth mindset.

PRAISING CHILDREN

Language that encourages a growth mindset can help children think creatively, problem solve, and pursue their own learning. It even helps foster more independent play!

Studies show children who are praised for specific effort show more creativity and intrinsic motivation whereas hearing “good job” or “you’re so smart” limits a child’s effort, perseverance, creativity, and risk taking. A child who constantly hears “good job” learns to seek approval and validation, which can make independent play feel very challenging when no one is there to provide praise. Using language to support a growth mindset will not only help your child become more comfortable with self-directed play, but it will also help them learn new skills throughout their life.

Instead of saying “good job,” praise…

- Effort
- Strategies
- Approach towards solving a problem

- Work ethic
- Persistence
- Learning from a mistake
- Showing kindness and encouragement

- Winning or losing graciously
- Resiliency

- Courage in trying something new
