Indoor Air Pollution

WHAT IS INDOOR AIR POLLUTION?

Americans spend 90% of their lives indoors. According to the EPA, indoor air quality is 5x worse than outdoor air quality.

Here’s why:

  • Indoor air pollution is caused by a combination of particles combined with invisible gases like ozone and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which are emitted by building materials, furniture, carpeting, paints, candles, cleaning products, air fresheners, fragrances, hairspray, nail polish, plastics, toys and more.

  • This fine dust or Particle Matter, known as PM2.5, is so small you could fit 40 PM2.5 particles across the width of a single strand of hair.

  • PM2.5 can be inhaled and enter your bloodstream, which means harmful toxins and toxicants in the air can pass through our lungs and be circulated to the heart, liver, kidneys, brain, and other organs.

Indoor air pollution can cause epidemic levels of both short term and long term issues.

Did you know the brain uses 3x as much oxygen as our muscles?! Researchers are beginning to study how clean filtered air impacts students learning & test scores.

Clean air is a critical component of minimizing our cumulative toxic burden and protecting our kiddos. Their rapidly growing bodies and brains are more susceptible.

Children’s risk is higher.

Children breathe more frequently/more volume throughout the day than adults.

CHILDREN’S RISK IS HIGHER

  • A harmful toxicant can be 10x more harmful to a young child than an adult.

  • Chemicals attach to dust like microscopic magnets and young babies and children absorb 5x as much dust.

Studies by The Lancet have found industrial chemicals that injure the developing brain are among the known causes for the rise in cognitive deficits, attention problems, and developmental disorders in children such as ADHD, autism, and other neurobehavioral problems.

Research also shows the chemicals in flame retardants from furniture/carpet can cause reproductive toxicity, immunotoxicity, endocrine disruption, cancer, and adverse effects on fetal and child development and neurological function.

WAYS TO IMPROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY

  1. Open the windows often. In the hot summer months, I open all the windows as soon as I wake up for 20-30 min.

  2. Invest in an Air Doctor

  3. Add some air-purifying plants around the house

  4. Avoid candles, perfume, and artificial fragrances (especially found in laundry detergent and cleaning supplies). Instead, try essential oils or nontoxic candles made with beeswax. I like these or these.

  5. Prioritize using a fragrance-free, nontoxic household cleaners. You can make your own for pennies using vinegar, baking soda, and lemon (lots of recipes online). My personal favorite is Branch Basics. It’s super easy to use, the all-in-one concentrate works on just about anything, and it was third-party tested to be as safe as saline. Save with code sunnyseed. You could also try this nontoxic disinfectant & cleaner. Both ship to USA & CAN.

  6. Allow new furniture, carpets, artificial Christmas trees, or other big items to “off-gas” outside for 48+ hours.

AIR DOCTOR

The Air Doctor's UltraHEPA™ Filter is able to capture 99.99% of the most dangerous PM2.5 particles including germs and viruses down to .003 microns in size. For reference, COVlD-l9 and the flu virus are ~0.125 in size. 90% of PM2.5 are actually smaller than 0.1 microns, and ordinary HEPA systems can only trap down to 0.3 microns.

The Air Doctor Pro is 100x more effective than other HEPA filters.

The Air Doctor can capture:

  • viruses, bacteria, and germs

  • dust

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

  • fragrances

  • smoke

  • pet dander

  • allergens

  • ozone

  • mold (experts estimate 70% of homes contain mold)

  • pollen

  • toxins and pollutants (including formaldehyde and flame retardants)

  • Set it to auto and it will automatically adjust its filtration level based on the room. When we cook, it ramps up as it senses the change.

  • It’s quiet. Affordable. Easy to move. Not an eyesore.

  • Sealed system

  • The only upkeep is changing the filters when it tells you to. We change the VOC/Gas filter ever six months and the UltraHEPA filter every year. Easy!

  • Includes a carbon, VOC, and formaldehyde filter.

In terms of toxicant INTAKE, there are things we can't control like natural disasters and industrial and vehicle fumes. We can control what's inside our homes, like the air we breathe while we sleep. The Air Doctor has given us so much peace of mind by capturing indoor air pollution, because we surely weren’t able to tear out all of our carpet and replace our furniture.

Our health journey is really about making manageable changes that help reduce our body’s cumulative toxic burden. I love knowing the Air Doctor can help our health in so many areas and I don’t have to think about it! We have one upstairs and one downstairs that we run 24/7.

Short term I’ve noticed relief from allergies, runny nose, itchy skin, and fatigue which is enough for me to sing it’s praises.
